A practical guide to eligibility, customs validation and refund methods for shopping in Italy.
English guide
Eligibility and refund flow
Best for
Non-EU travellers planning purchases in Italy
If you shop in Italy and live outside the European Union, VAT refund is available only if the purchase, the paperwork and the customs validation are handled correctly from the start.
Single-invoice purchase above EUR 70 VAT included
Tax free document issued at the store during checkout
Customs validation before leaving the EU
Refund options available by service channel and store procedure
Section 1
VAT refund is meant for travellers who reside outside the European Union and buy goods for personal use while visiting Italy.
The purchase has to be documented correctly on a single invoice and the goods must leave the EU within the legal time limit.
Section 2
Ask the retailer to issue the tax free document while paying. Do not wait until later, because passport details and buyer information need to be entered correctly at the time of sale.
Before leaving the store, check your name, passport number, country of residence and the description of the purchased goods.
Section 3
Before your final departure from the European Union, customs may ask to inspect the goods. This is why purchases should remain unused and available for control.
Once the document is validated, the refund follows the path indicated by the service: downtown cash refund, airport cash refund, credit card refund or international cheque.
Before you leave Italy
Step 1
Keep purchases accessible in your luggage
Step 2
Carry your passport and tax free form together
Step 3
Allow time for customs before boarding
Step 4
Double-check the refund option on your document
